Family Newsletter February 2011

Dear Family,

We celebrate the season of love in the month of February. Joyce Rupp in her amazing book Out of the Ordinary speaks of the Lord asking us to be His valentine. An excerpt from this writing asks the question.

Will You Be My Valentine?
“Jesus speaks to me:
Will you be my valentine? Will you be my friend?
Which is to say?
Will you let me give you my unconditional love?
Will you accept my peace for your tired and worn self?
Will you receive my mercy and forgiveness?
Will you believe in my love when everyone else has gone away or given up on you?
Will you be generous enough to take my love to others when they need you?
Will you be bread to my hungry, love to my needy, hope to my desolate?
Will you love yourself well and believe in the gifts I’ve given you?
Will you trust me to always companion you?
Will you lay down your life for me?
Will you be my valentine? Will you be my friend?

The Sacrament of Reconciliation was celebrated on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at our church. 61 children received this beautiful sacrament of forgiveness and healing. We are grateful to our priests, catechists and parents for working in a partnership of faith to help prepare our children. The children were wonderfully prepared and received the sacrament with great joy. The day indeed created a positive memory of this beautiful sacrament.

The Sacrament of First Eucharist will be celebrated on Saturday, April 30, 2011 and Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 10:00am. At this time there are 32 children signed-in for April 30th and 29 for signed-in for May 7th. A planning meeting for parents interested in serving on that team will be Saturday, February 5th at 9:15am at Emerson-Williams School. Parents serving on the planning team are asked to attend this gathering.

There will be a catechist meeting for all catechists K-6 on February 5, 2011 at 10:45am in Father Crawford Hall. This meeting place was chosen so that each catechist can take the display boards for the Faith Fair. All catechists are to be in attendance. We will talk about the season of Lent, the outreach to the children in Africa and the faith fair. I would also like you think about the Loyola Press curriculum.. what you like and what you don’t like.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word: This ministry continues to flourish. The prayer and preparation of the presiders is indeed a blessing. It is truly amazing to see the children come forth with such reverence and enthusiasm to receive God’s Word at their own level. Children from age 4 years to grade three receive a reflection in the hall and children from grades4-6 receive a reflection on the stage. Worshipping as a family is such an important piece of family life. The Eucharist feeds our longing souls. Consider this: Attending Mass is being a part of God’s team and weekly practice is a life enriching experience.

The CLW Refreshment Team: After each Mass at which Children’s Liturgy of the Word takes place, we gather in the hall for fellowship. Munchkins and juice are served. We are very grateful to the Kelly family for hosting so many CLW mornings. We are also grateful to the families that signed-up to host the refreshments after Mass.
Attendance Policies: In order for our Faith Formation Program to be truly effective and enriching to our children, our policy is that each child has two excused absences. Anything more than that is brought to the attention of the director or the coordinator and make-up sessions will need to be arranged. Of course in extreme cases such as illness or family emergencies absences will be excused as long as the Faith Formation Office is notified.

Basketball Stars: We are so proud of our basketball teams and our wonderful coaches. They will be participating in the February Frenzy at Corpus Christi School. The Joseph A. Reilly February Frenzy begins Friday, February 21st and the games continue the entire week. Please support our teams by attending the games.

Project Baby Love: All families are encouraged to participate in this very important collection for Birthright. Birthright is an organization that reaches out to women and children. We will be collecting disposable diapers and wipes on Saturday, February 12th at Emerson-Williams School. I will need catechists to bring the items to Father Crawford Hall. Parish family home catechists are asked to bring your collected items to the church hall. Please support the Birthright ministry. This will be a loving way to help young women who chose to birth their children and raise them. Thank you.

The Annual Poor Person’s Soup Supper hosted by our 2011 Confirmation candidates will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 5:00pm in Father Crawford Hall. This year the proceeds will benefit The House of Bread and Kid’s Café. Tickets for adults will be $5.00 and for children 12 and under $2.00. Please support this event by attending or giving a donation to the cause the week before the event. We seek to love in a time when so many are suffering, so many are hungry and so many are homeless.

Please visit our wonderful website. We have gathered many beautiful pictures which will soon be posted. You can keep up with all parish events and schedules. Stay tuned for information about our Parish Lenten Mission. Also, all storm cancelations will be posted on our website:
