"The Lord is near to all who call upon him."
We sometimes wonder how near the Lord actually is. Our heartfelt prayers and entreaties seem often to fall on deaf ears. However, if we take a closer look at the psalm verses that we sing today, we may find some answers.
The psalmist reminds us that the Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. In this regard is the Lord not unlike the patient parent whose “nearness” is known in his watchful providence and unconditional love?
Continuing, we read that the “Lord is good to all and compassionate toward all his works.” The Lord’s is a subtle and constant presence, quietly filling the spaces of our hearts. While all else in our lives may be fleeting, it is the presence and providence of God that remain constant and trustworthy. And a heart that truly knows and embraces that reality is one that can sing, along with the psalmist, “Every day I will bless you and I will praise your name forever and ever.”
