How beautiful and appropriate to bring the liturgical year to a close with this beloved Psalm! One preacher made the observation that millions of people have memorized this psalm; it has been the subject of countless funeral prayer cards; it has been a source of comfort through severe personal trials, illness, and the dying process; and for some, it would be the last words they would ever say as they passed into eternity.
So many words come to mind as one reflects upon the words of Psalm 23 with respect to one’s relationship with God: protection, providence, trust, dependence, restoration, abundance, watchfulness, assurance. We walk with the Lord as He shepherds us. There is nothing that we fear.
King David, who may have written this song and was perhaps inspired by his youthful days as a shepherd, tells us that to have God as our Shepherd is to have everything we want. He who is all-knowing, all-powerful and all-caring, is enough. With Him we need nothing more.
The King of Love my Shepherd is and He is mine forever.
